Introduction

In 1948, U.S. President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981, officially integrating the U.S. Armed Forces several years before the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s grained momentum.  However, de facto segregation remained in many divisions until the Korean conflict.
