Social Media and College Policy Exercise

Take a look at the KCKCC Student Code of Conduct and think critically about how it might apply to social media use.

To get a better idea of the range of policies other college and universities use, read this article from Inside Higher Ed.

Then create a post in the discussion area that answers the following questions:

1. Identify at least one provision from the code that you think is a good idea, a rule that students should definitely have to obey. Why do you think this is a smart rule?

2. Identify at least one provision from the code that you find troublesome. Which of these rules seems like it might go too far when controlling what you can and can't do with social media? What problems do you think might occur if and when this provision is enforced?

The Perils of Posting

So if you were being asked by your current boss (or previous boss if you aren’t working right now) what the company’s social media policy should be, how would you respond? Should employers leave it up to platforms to regulate content, or should they reserve the right to fire employees based on their posts? Should the employer be able to fire people for anything the company doesn’t like, or should there be limits to the workplace’s intrusion into employees’ off-duty lives?

Trollbusters

But when should trollbusters or the social media themselves intervene?  In the public mind, the line between “obnoxious jerk” and “online harasser” can be more than a little fuzzy. Have a look at the hypotheticals posed in this study from the Pew Research Center. Where do you draw the line? Why do you draw it there? And what’s the best way to deal with people who cross it?

Stopping the spread of hate

So what should a social media platform (you can pick which one to work with) do to reduce the risk that they’ll be used to spread hate? New content restrictions? Stricter enforcement of current restrictions? Something else? Nothing at all?
