Television Exercise

Motorola Television

Watch an hour of TV. Watch whatever you'd like, but this exercise works better if you select an hour-long show (or equivalent on a streaming service) rather than part of a longer movie or a set of shorter programs.

Count and describe the acts of violence you see on the show.

Before you begin, come up with your own definition of "violent act" so you know what you're looking for. If you find that you need to change your definition while you're watching that's OK.

Using your definition, watch your hour of TV and count the number of violent acts you see.

Post your definition in the discussion. If you changed it while watching explain how and why. List the name of the show, where you saw it (cable channel, streaming service, etc.). Then ad your count and brief descriptions of at least some of the violent acts you observed.

The V Chip

So what should the FCC do? Admit failure and give up? Push for mandatory changes to video viewing apps so that they can pick up the ratings signal and block content if parents want? Pursue other content restrictions that don’t depend on content blocking? Use thoughts and examples from the readings to justify your answer.

Pot ads on TV?

For this question, imagine that you’re the ad manager for a local TV station in a state where recreational marijuana is legal. A local pot store submits a request for ad time to promote its products and services. Do you accept the ad? Use thoughts and examples from the readings to justify your answer.
