Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
Why only a week? We're celebrating banned books all month long at KCKCC! Browse the library's collection of books banned and challenged throughout the years across the United States, vote for which book you'd save, get your mugshot taken reading a banned book, and recreate or reimagine the cover of your favorite banned book in the Makerspace! Be sure to pick up your Censorship is so 1984 button!
Venture by the bulletin board in the main entrance and cast your vote for which of the 6 books from the most banned books of 2024 you'd save! Would you ban these titles? You may be shocked to know they've all been on the banned book list more than once! We'll reveal the statistics and results of the voting on our social media at the end of October!
Drop by the Makerspace during the month of October and design a cover for your favorite banned book. Recreate the original or author your own design with paint on vinyl!
We encourage you to get caught reading a banned book this month. Bring your own or choose one of ours and get your mugshot taken for our "Library's Most Wanted" board! Visit the Library to join our "reading club"!
