Banned Books Week September 22-28, 2024

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

2024 Events

Banned but not buried in this library we read banned books

Browse the library's Banned Book Week displays where you can find your next great read. Be careful though, thinking can be viewed as a dangerous activity!

Would you ban these books?

Venture by the Math & Science Center and cast your vote on 5 different children's picture books. Would you ban these titles? You may be shocked to know they've all been on the banned book list more than once! We'll reveal the statistics and results of the voting on our social media during Banned Book Week!

Banned books are at a record high.

Drop by the Makerspace during the month of September and design a cover for your favorite banned book. Recreate the original or author your own design with paint on vinyl!

Write your own headlines

Banned books have been making headlines quite often lately. Stop by the Writing Center and craft your own banned book headlines. We'll share our favorites during Banned Book Week on our social media!

Get caught reading a banned book

We encourage you to get caught reading a banned book this month. Bring your own or choose one of ours and get your mugshot taken for our "Library's Most Wanted" board! Visit the Library to join our "reading club"!

Movie Day in the Campfire

Of course the book was better, but join us on September 25 at 2 p.m. to watch The Perks of Being a Wallflower in the Campfire. The book is ranked #4 on ALA's 2023 Most Challenged Book List.
